Trophy antelope...to us anyway

My wife and I just returned Saturday night from her antelope hunt in the Interstate Unit. She had drawn a doe tag for her first hunting trip ever. We spent a lot of time looking at nothing, and most of the antelope we did see were small lone bucks. Then on the fourth morning we chased a herd out from beside the road. We managed to find them again after parking and hiking over a ridge. One shot was all my wife needed. I know a doe will not be much beside the other photos I expect to see in the next few months, but it was a great outcome for a first hunt.

Quinton:

I've always believed its the HUNT that makes the trophy. . .not the critter. Good on you and your wife for a great hunt and a humane kill.

2009 Oregon High Country Blacktail

Here is the full-velvet high country Oregon blacktail that I took with my Mathews DXT on 9/5/09. It's a 4x3 and he is 19" wide. He has a massive body, topping 250 pounds. When I shot the first time he was 30 yards up a steep hill from me. I was shooting at about a 50 degree angle or more. I made a perfect shot, right where I aimed behind the front shoulder. It was such a steep angle that the arrow caught the top of one lung and then hit his spine and he went right down. He tumbled 20 yards down the hill at me and was still trying to run when I shot him the second time.

Since I'm stuck in Iraq until November, I had Dad run up to Oregon City and pick up the mount I had done of my 2008 Oregon Rocky Mountain goat. This was the goat I wrote about in my field journal:

Dad was kind enough to indulge me with a few photos of the finished product, which is hanging in his shop pending the building of a shop/man cave of my own.

Came across these guys who had spent all morning looking for this buck with no success. They asked if me and my dog would help them find him after about an hour I found blood and then about 100 yards farther down the hill I found the buck. They were so happy that we were willing to help them. I know that its not legal to look for game with a dog but I'm not going to let someone's trophy rot if I can help it.
