Salt stations

On June sixth we went in to check our salt stations and came to find they worked very well. Last year my buddy Bryan killed a spike elk not 100 yards from the big station. We came to find that since last fall the elk and deer have eaten about six feet of each log, as well as eaten the dirt below the mineral block that is now gone. I am very excited to see what comes out of this upcomming seasons.

Binford-

Nice job getting a kill off of your salt. I usually put all of mine out in mid july. If your targeting elk specifially might i make a suggestion that was taught to me (By Troy i believe) and works very well??

Try breaking those blocks up into 2 or even three different pieces, and spread those pieces 30-40 yards apart. When you get elk coming into salt or mineral licks nearly every time from my experiece of watching from summer study stands the lead cow will take over that single salt station and protect it from the rest of the herd. When she gets her fill infact if have seen both cows and bulls actually lay on top of the hole. By spreading out a station into a few different spots you can postion a stand to where you have shooting angles at all of the blocks. In my experience this will produce a much more productive stand area as far as harvesting animals is concerned if you hunt over the salt.

Try it and tell me what you think.

BTW what type of block is that your using?

I usually just use 3-50lb bags of feed salt poured in the hole with a gallon of mollases in each for each salt site, and then turn to blocks 2 weeks before archery season.

Oh i forgot one very important little tid bit that has proven very important for my success at getting the elk consistently on the salt. You should have a water source near by, some of my most productive have been right next to wallows in fact. You give them water, salt, and cover, and they will consistently stay around. They have no reason to leave.

The mollases is a new one to me. I will deffenetly try it out. About the water there is a big pond within a hundred yards of both stations. Breaking up the blocks is what we just tried on the other station. We tried cameras last year but both of them got destroyed by bear. We couldnt even get any pics off them. As for the turning of the blocks i would love to but just dont have the time the stations are over an hour away from my house plus about an hour hike. To get to them its 3/10 of a mile as the crow flys but 900ft drop in elevation. totally worth it though. The pond is full of cutthrout trout and are a blast to catch!!
