Hiking Close to Home
Living in Oregon, I am truly blessed to have so many places to hike within 10 to 30 miles of my house. Not only do I get to prepare for hunting season by climbing the steep and varied terrain often found in Oregon, I also get to enjoy the beautiful scenery that the state has to offer, including its many species of flora and fauna.
A month ago I happened to come across an area near town that should be on a map of Eugene hiking hotspots, but at first glance appears to see little human use. While not a long or advanced hike, it is varied enough for both beginner and experienced hikers to enjoy.
At the end of a long day of work I called my friend Jodi Scott to see if he wanted to join me, and we headed out of town around 6:00 PM. Once at the trailhead, we started our hike around 6:30 PM with plenty of light left. Our goal was to hit the top of the mountain before sunset, and hike out while there was still a little light left.

The Hike Up
If you stay on the trail, you’ll come up about mid-way up the mountain, but we decided to cut downhill toward the bottom of the mountain, as we wanted a little more challenging hike.

Looking Back After Initial Climb
What I found was absolutely amazing: oceans of green grass, springs flowing down the mountain, deer roaming everywhere, signs of recent coyote activity, various flora, and breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

Between 7:30 and 8:00, the deer started appearing on the edge of the forest to feed, including a pair of bucks that were just starting to show a little antler growth.

Because we were losing light and I kept stopping to take pictures, we only made it a short distance past the mid-way point.

Mid-way Up the Trail
By then we were able to enjoy the sunset. While not extraordinary, it was a great way to end the day.
